To become a Chinese citizen so you can get a HKSAR passport, yes you have to give up your Indian citizenship.

You would apply for naturalization as a Chinese national first. This would take longer that 4 weeks. You don't need to give up Indian nationality until after you've been given the Approval-In-Principle.

    See this thread: http://www.geoexpat.com/forum/thread3471.html

This post also gives a timetable: http://www.geoexpat.com/forum/post230277-2.html

Note that since you are travelling to China, this becomes more complicated. An HKSAR passport is not enough to allow you to travel to China. See http://www.geoexpat.com/forum/thread64371.html (note - that's not my personal experience but someone's elses).

One hopes that the Indian consulate is efficient and allows you to give up nationality same day or next day. Then you'll be able to become a Chinese national on the same day and apply for an HKSAR passport right away, and you should be able to obtain it 10 days later according to http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hktraveldoc_1.htm

According to http://www.geoexpat.com/forum/post230494-6.html it can be done in a single morning???
