    Dependant Visa Renewal---Please help

I (Hong Kong Permanent Resident) sponsored a Dependant Visa for my 4 years old son (US Citizen) a year ago. Back then, the immigration dept. looked into details regarding my financial standings, such as bank deposits, tax records, and my work history and qualifications. It took me three trips to put together anything for them to look at.

    Questions:

    1. It is time to renew now. I looked over the Application for an Extensions of Stay form ID91 and ID481A, they don’t ask for financial standings on both forms. Is it not required for renewal/extension? Should I still need to be prepared?

    2. Son’s passport expires in Sept. 2010, his visa expires in June 2010, would it be a problem?

    Thank you

    1. No you don't have to go through the whole process again. The forms you list (and the travel documents) are all you need.

    2. They won't give you a visa that goes beyond the validity of the passport. I'm not sure for US passports when you can apply for a renewal, but I think you could do it now (within 6 months of expiry). Details, forms etc at the US Consulate site.

i would get his new passport NOW, then apply for the extension of stay.

yes, i would prepare the financial stuff just in case. you probably won't need it, unless you've changed jobs)...

    [edit - beaten to it]

    However, additionally...

I would get the new passport now (if you can) then get a transfer of endorsement of the current visa into the new passport (this takes just a couple of hours at immigration) and then apply for the new visa in may/June for the new passport.

I don't really understand the need for the transfer of endorsement. You can carry the old passport with the new one anyway, and it would only be for a few months - how many trips will the kid make in that time?

Yes, on second thoughts, you're absolutely right - and it costs another $160, so ignore that part of my post.

    I'll get my coat...

No need for visa transfer ... and extension of dependent visa is very straightforward process.
