I believe only new cards can be applied for overseas. Replacement of old cards has to be done in Hong Kong, either in person or by post.

I think you can only get a new ID card at a Chinese foreign mission when applying for a HKSAR passport. Of course that also requires being a Chinese citizen.
In addition, that ID card is apparently only "temporary" and you have to apply for a new one if you ever return to live in Hong Kong.
AMOY =Amendment of Year
Yup thats right - i have AMOY on mines.
I think the only place you see "AMOY" now is on those temporary ID cards. The plastic ID cards no longer list the gender and whatever Y stands for.
Renewing old id cards to the new smart id card - does anyone know what documentation is required (if any)?
Or, because i already have the id card (and thus, they've already seen all necessary documents and proof), do i simply need to bring myself with that old id card to my appointment to renew it - and nothing else?
Anyone know for certain?
Cheers,
