Can I go to Hong Kong on my tourist visa for 3 months whilst waiting for my working visa?

No work, paid or unpaid. It is quite clear in the guidelines IF you read them.

Right. And, if the immigration guys suspect you are working in the interim, or catch you doing it, not getting your work visa approved will be the least of your worries...

why don't you ask you employer to arrange for your working visa first?!
its his job to do it..not yours.
there is NO other way out.

How comes your friend didn't make any arrangements for you? Does he even have a license for running his restaurant?

What about if I cook some pizzas in my apartment, and then my friend can pick them up to use in the Kowloon restaurant? Let's just say I'm doing it as hobby and donating to the restaurant. Is this ok? I love pizza!!!
