hi sunniefaith
glad that you come to hk soon. and hope everything goes well with you.
regarding to rent an appartment, i hope i could give you some useful comments.
i don't know which part of hk you are going to work in, but you should be aware of the pollution level of that region as some of the regions say Tuen Mun and Yuen long are not good. even i am a native here i felt suffrocated once while i was in there.
for the amount of rent, i would say that over 10k should be of good condition, with club facilities or swimming pool (except central and causeway bay), but it depends on your budget. you can always bargain the rent a little bit lower than the asking price. for the local expats, as i know, around 6k to 8k is fair enough.
in hk, most of the appartment lease period is one year contract.that's mean you will be stuck into the place if you ultimately found that you don't like the place, so don't be rush to rent a place. hk people reason everything by contracts.
if you can not find a good appartment within a month or you think that you should take some time to find, there are plenty of hotel suite which is nice and have included all of the furnitures for you to stay. of course the price would be high (as i know, if you just rent it month by month, the rent should be around 12k or so) and during this period you can just relaxed and take more time to find a suitable appartment
hope my information is helpful to you
