Moving to South Lantau (Mui Wo & Pui O)

Can anyone tell me the pluses of moving to South Lantau. I have been hearing good things about this area and wanted to learn more about it. How is the commute to Central? Thanks!

Depends on what aspects you are talking about. Its only a 30 minute ferry ride to Central and the ferry in Mui Wo is in a good location. Although the Ferry stops on the weekend between 3 and 6 I believe, there is no MTR at all during that time. Rent has been going up but it is still very cheap compared to other places. Mui Wo is laid back environment with lots of surrounding nature. I enjoy going there visiting friends, hiking, or having BBQ's.

Mui Wo is cheap, laid back. Bus to Tung Chung for the MTR is infrequent (about one or two an hour) and slow - and packed with hikers on weekends. Ferry is ok for central. It's a different experience to many other places in HK - most people will probably tell you that you are mad to move there but just ignore them and go look for yourself. Couple of nice restaurants near the ferry pier too - I particularly liked the Turkish one.

Nice beach and hiking trails. I noticed a lot of expats with kids and dogs there. I wished the ferry was a bit faster, kind of felt seasick towards the end.

Mui Wo is getting popular with its fast ferry link into Central (30 mins on fast ferry) and relatively low rents. I get a lot of queries about it these days so I have set up a post with FAQs in my blog. YOu can check it out here.

    southlantau and wizardofoz like this.

When we were buying a place a couple of years ago we had a brief look at properties in estate agents windows on Lantau when we were over for a visit to the beach. We didn't look into it in detail but we were surprised at how expensive they were.Cheaper than HK side obviously but not by anywhere near as much as we would have expected. Seems to have become a recognised 'expat area' with expat prices to match.

That's because he is lazy. I am into Lahmacun but he does not serve it either.
