Ok, that makes a lot of sense.

I used to live in areas without convenient shops and restaurants nearby but I considered such factors to be a factor in my location rather than a deal breaker, like no internet would be. But this added inconvenience would make grocery shopping and travel a real hassle then...

There are some grocery shops and restaurants on Cheung Chau so I guess you could do most of your shopping there. To get to Kowloon / HK Island would still be a bit of a pain though.

Ha! Lantau (the accessible part) is not that bad! You make it sound like being stuck in the middle of the Sahara :-)

Actually, the ferry schedule between Cheung Chau & Central is more frequent than Mui Wo - and with only 15mins from the Sea Ranch to CC ferry pier, it sounds almost bearable. Cheung Chau itself is quite well supplied, so for those flexible with their work, one doesn't need to visit the 'mainland' that often.

(Reasonable Internet access is apparently now possible through a few of the mobile carriers)

I've been drawn to Sea Ranch since I first heard of it. I need to spend a night or two there!

Maybe you can get close and swim up, but it is private property, so I doubt they'd let you dock.

I reckon you could dock, to let passengers on and off and then go quickly.
