    Help with Lamma Island!

    Hi guys,

Apologies for repeating what i'm sure has been discussed before I can't seem to find many recent discussions re: living/renting on lamma island. I am keen on Lamma as I've done the city life around the world and although I will work on HK island, the idea of escaping is very appealing! The thought of spending time at home in a box looking at other high rises is depressing! Would really appreciate any feedback on the following!

Anyone that commutes daily for a '9-5' - how often do you find problems with ferry due to weather? Is it normal to crash at a hotel for the night if so..

Could I realistically find a nice 1 or 2 bed place for 8-10,000 incl bills?

I'm 28, male and in HK alone - although I'd like to be away from the city, it would be good to know there is a few places to have a drink and a laugh with other residents?

The commute to central is around 30 minutes. This doesn't seem too bad but am I underestimating the 'hassle factor' of the journey if i stay later on the island for sports or networking events?

Talking of which, is there any football/soccer or tennis on the island?

Any feedback on any of the above would be great.

    Cheers

    Elliot

I live in Lamma island for about 8 months now. I mean to say I really enjoy living there and your budget is quite enough to rent a place for one bedroom of 700 sq ft. There is a soccer and rundown tennis court there, but not sure if there is a regular practice or game going on (obviously I don't play either of them!) But, I mean to say this Lamma has its own way to do things. Some likes it, but some don't. So, it all depends on you! E.g. you never find any chain store there, as they prefer local little store. the last ferry during the weekdays is 12:30am, but on the weekends, it's 2:30am. I hate the fact that they only run every hour after 8:30pm. But, in the morning and rush hour, it runs every 20 or 30min.
There are some bars and places you can networking with people and I think a lot of people will even hang out at LKF.
If you go find a flat, be careful some flats are up on the hill and so you can say it's a great workout until you got off the plane from your lovely vacation and find that you're too tired to drag your suitcase up the hill!
Hope this is helpful! Or you can go to a website called Lamma.com.hk to look for more info.

I live on another island and although we also have road access, the ferries have never been a problem in bad weather. When they raise T8, you usually have time to get home before they shut it down (I think it's an hour's notice), and when everyone knows you live on an island you will get to go home first if they are expecting it to reach T8 so all in all, it isn't any more troublesome than living a bus ride away from work (and it is more relaxing than a bus ride in my opinion).

    Take care

For more detailed info on Lamma visit www.lamma.com.hk and check the buy/sell forum for property postings. Visit Yung Shue Wan. However 10K for 700sf (1 floor) is no longer realistic especially the ground floor (often comes with some outside space) or the top florr (comes with roof).
