I'm just curious...how do you rent a village house? Are they listed with particular agents? I've never seen one for rent with any of the real estate agents I've been using...

Try visiting the area and going to the local agents, checking shop windows, fly posters etc. A little Cantonese will help but can be done without any.
the big guys don't tend to go near them, a local agent like these people seem to specialise

Most of these agents deal with village houses. For Sai Kung / Clear Water Bay area.

Boris, sometimes you are so confrontational. Ok so I bow to the greater knowledge of the man from a million village houses.....
When I was looking in Sai Kung/CWB - yes by actually going there.. the big boys were next to useless.
Is all this bluster really helpful to the OP?
Onwards Realty has been spamming us with their flyers lately. They seem to work mainly in the Tsing Yi/Shem Tsang/Ma Wan area.
Just to point out that by pointing out to the OP that the info he is being given is " not accurate " ISN'T being confrontational. Like wise telling the person giving that info he is talking out his arse is not confrontational.
ESPECIALLY when that same person ADMITS he knows the info is wrong and then tries to excuse it by saying " they where next to useless ".
In fact if you had ANY IDEA about agencies you would know, that they are variable in their service and expertise. Even if they are a brand name.
The OP just wants to know how to rent a village house. Perhaps you should have just kept your prejudice in a locked box and just said " go to a local agent and shop around - its that easy. "
But maybe thats a tad too confrontational for you - I call it being helpfull.
