Yes, that is the key thing. It's ok for the OP to be gay in HK, just don't broadcast this fact to rub in the face of locals.

even if you do the most aggression you may see will be a quiet " tut tut".

HK is not like London where last year a gay man was beaten to death in the middle of a crowded Leicester Square by a drunk female chav.

nor anything like Britain in general when it comes to senseless crime. Whether its vandalism for no reason at one end or callous murder with winesses not doing anything at the extreme end; you wont see anything like this in Hong Kong:

    Police also being investigated:

Its not Leicester Square; I'm pretty sure its this one:

But its not that uncommon :

Gay Bashing is a national sport, followed closely by drunk bashing:

We are very fortunate to be in Hong Kong where we take safety for granted....

On the other hand, we do get comedy attacks by nutters wielding air-conditioners.

Anyway, back to the OP: the idea that the bulk of HK people give a rat's ass about someone's sexuality is quite implausible. Maybe if you were living in some backwater village and had already done something to piss off the locals?

Foreigners are generally regarded as eccentric anyway, and there are plenty of obviously gay Chinese guys around. (Though sometimes it's pretty hard to tell given the way straight guys dress.)
