    Break-lease

    Hi,

I'm thinking about moving to a new apartment but if I sign for 1 year, I may or may not stay in HK long enough to fulfill that duration.

If for example I decide to leave after 8 months, leaving 4 months left, how would the process of breaking the contract go about?
Would I lose the entire deposit (approx 2 months)?

    Details would be appreciated!

    Thanks

Pay the 5 remaining months (12+1-8) to the landlord and they will return your 2 months deposit.

    Yes.

If you have been paying rent on time, best to have a chat with your current landlord for a min 6M contract + month to month after that? Been known to happen.

If you are not sure, better to do a deal with your current landlord. Save on moving costs and remove the risk of being stuck with a lease payments for longer than you want.
