Last Month's rent and security deposit

We've given our two month's notice, which our landlord accepted quite graciously, and we'll be moving out 31 December. He's even offered to let us stay a bit longer on a prorated basis if the new apartment isn't ready. (although I suppose this potentially benefits him as well as us)

How do we handle the last month's rent and the deposit. Do we just stop the auto pay from the bank, and expect to get the deposit back in a few weeks?

We've done everything via email- do I need to have anything in actual hardcopy, saying he's agreed to us ending the lease? He's been a good landlord, but I don't want to be naive either.

    Thanks

i suggest you propose to him that he takes your deposit against the last two months rent. we proposed that and our landlord accepted

hmm- probably should have done that, but we only have the one month left.

I suppose I'll just tell him that he can keep the last month's rent for December, and that we'll expect the deposit returned to us in early January.
