Moving to HK in a week

Can I say something here? I am local, but I am polite most of the time. I've seen some white dudes are not gentlemen too. They don't hold for the doors too. I nod and greeting when people say morning to me. I give my seat to those needed people while i am on the bus or train. I do say thanks if people give me a hand. Actually, it depends on what kind of environment they are growing up. For example, if poeple have well educated, they wont act like that. Not their faults, its GOV'T...

Would like to hear more about what you mean by "Not their faults, its GOV'T..." what did or didn't the gov't do? And what do you think the gov't is supposed to do?

I mean some people have no morals. Gov't should educate 'em....well...whatever....I can't judge on everyone. I dont like Chinese Gov't even I am local

Who is the Chinese government? Are you talking about the HK Government? I supposed they are different.

I cannot agree to the point about the HK people are not polite. Also, I cannot understand why EUChinese said that the ladies in HK are arrogant. What I see is the culture difference. Honestly speaking, the white people in HK are much arrogant than those in the Western countries. At least, it is my findings from living in different places. But what I see is the different cultures and thus it causes different perceptions to things and people.

there are different types of people everywhere. think you guys may have encountered some really bad experience, but sure not everyone here is like this. can't expect everyone to be as polite as a receptionist all the time. i do say thank you, nod and smile most of the time and try to hold the door for people, i do my part to be polite and if they don't appreciate and say thank you, what can i say? don't have to be upset or feel bad about that.

or maybe you can be a bit more optimistic? think that they appreciate what you do to them, and they are just too shy to say thank you ?

Does anyone have any information or advice on the Kapok serviced apartment on 28 harbour road in Wanchai. My office will be in central but it seems like it's harder to get an apartment than finding gold in HK these days. My office has booked the Kapok just in case but was wondering if anyone had stayed there and had any comments about the neighborhood and the building.

Aren't morals or manners taught by your parents? Why would the government have a role in teaching morals or manners?

EXACTLY! This is a very common way of think for Cantonese/Chinese to think that it's the government's responsibility to teach the public morals and manners. Parents, do something about it!

I am a local chinese and i got the same feeling..

they don't trust "strangers"........
they do think why you treat me good?
why hold the door for me....hold the lift car for me....share an umbrella when raining....etc....

however, i can say that u can find hong kong ppl is nice.......

if you stay longer in Hong Kong, u can discover more and more.......

I never stayed at Kapok but had a look at it about 2 months ago while I was here searching for a serviced apartment. Kapok is okay - rooms like decent and size is okay; however, it is quite a hike to the MTR station. It's definitely easy to catch a cab to work as taxis are cheap. Not sure what it will cost you, but maybe it will be around $30 - $40 HKD each way if you are working in Central. There are still several serviced apartments in the Central and Mid Levels area which would be closer to work. But again, will depend on your budget. Check the links for serviced apartments. Even if you don't like it, it's just one month; hopefully by that time you will have found a decent place to lease. Good luck!
