Is my pay lower than HK marketing price

    Hi everyone,

I have 6+ years experience on information technology.

A company wants to hire me as a sub-contractor. The salary is 18K.

    Is this too low?

Waiting for your feedback and suggestions. Thanks!

There is no bar on salary really here. In IT I suspect it is an employers market.

I know people getting 35k for jobs in which others are getting 20k. Bear in mind sub-contractors generally don't get MPF, gratuity, medical, housing allowance allocated into the salary etc which could devalue your monthly by 20-25%.

That sounds low to me, I'm on a contract and get a lot more than that and I also have 6 years experience. Are you already in HK or are you being recruited from abroad? And what industry is the company in?

    Thanks Lammarite.

I heard the HK employers always ask the current salary, then give several percents raise.

If my current salary is 18k, it must be very hard to negotiate a good salary when I plan to find another job. Is this correct?

Only if you tell them it was 18K!

18k sounds very low for 6 yrs experience. Lammarite is correct, although I have heard of some employers actually ask for your previous payment slips, though I think you can "white lie" within reason.

If you have to relocate to HK, then 18K is way to low. It is not even enough to get a work visa approved! But if you are a local, then anything from 20K-40K for 6 years experience is the norm.

18k is the salary for an ibm's fresh graduate consultant trainee. :X
