Why silly? 9K is perfectly fine if you are willing to:
    (a) eat like locals do by buying local meat&produce
    (b) stay away from 5* restaurants
    (c) limit going out to twice a month

we should ban everyone w/o common sense from getting jobs that pay $23k/mth including rent and anyone that earns $91k/mth.

It is all relative to what you are used to though. The problem is, we have no idea what constitutes the "pre-HK" life that you are trying to emulate! If it included buying fancy clothes, jetting off to Europe for long weekends, eating in up market restaurants several nights a week and going to night clubs - then no, I'd say you'd struggle to emulate that on 23k.

If, on the other hand, your idea of fun is to go to the cinema, eat in a simple local restaurant, meet up with a few friends and go hiking/playing squash/football/dragon boating and you have not plans to rebuild your entire wardrobe, then it's fine.

Perhaps someone could produce a spreadsheet. Enter the number of dependents, accommodation budget required, number of times going out, type of food eaten (local or western), etc. People could enter the info and get an answer. Sure save a lot of these threads.

Folks, unless you are a very junior staff or something like that, 23K + accomodation (like what 10K maybe? or 15K? or even 20K) is OK but it is isn't like the OP is going to be living like a king!!

Let's not foul ourselves. 23K is OK but no need to jump at him as if he was asking: "I will be earning 300K month + housing, will I survive?", but "23K+housing" is OK, nothing obscene or indecent there.

That is actually a good idea and something that could be added to the website....

    Travel per day - $20 - MTR/bus - $600/mth x 2 people $1200/mth
    Food/necessities - $600/week for 2 people - $2400/mth - really good budget actually.
    Entertainment - $300 per night out - firsts & main + a wine or beer x 2 people x 4 times a week = $2400/mth
    Internet - reasonable package - $200/mth
    Electricity/Water - $250/mth
    Phone $1500/mth for two people
    Clothes/other things $1500/mth x 2 = $3000/mth (or $2500 for girls and $500 for boys!)

Total $10,950 for two - reasonable?

You can pick what is more important.

Obviously rent on top as well as tax savings are needed!

quite an effort breaking the expenses down. i reckon that answers OP's question. now i wonder how long it would take for another similar post to appear.
