Agree. You can easily do it on 9k. Just don't live like an 'expat' king of the world. Just had a lovely meal for two people for 100HKD for 2 people (no beer, just tea) at local place. Going out is cheap as chips if you limit yourself to a few drinks only - is not going to work if you like to have 15 pints in a session and take advantage of happy hours which are dime a dozen in this town. Also, learn to cook with what is available in Wellcome/Park n Shop and stay away from Great/Taste/360/CitySuper. Not a life of luxury by any means and I'm not suggesting it is - but it can be done without living in dire poverty that is for sure.

That's very high. My total phone bill (fixed plus mobile plus IDD) rarely exceeds $300 per month (for one).

Let's not foul ourselves. 23K is OK but no need to jump at him as if he was asking: "I will be earning 300K month + housing, will I survive?", but "23K+housing" is OK, nothing obscene or indecent there.
What is being asked by the OP is a completely reasonable question....alot of people here seem to forget when they were new and without any local knowledge.

others are just oblivious to the value of their money (possibly because they are undeserving of this salary?) and ask if making 10x average wage is enough to survive.

Absolute nonsense....you have again turned what was a legimate question from the OP into something more personal...you need to get over it and move on. He (or she) has asked a very normal question, leave him be.

I have to agree on this one. This is not the "91k" question - this is a much more reasonable level to be asking. I'd have to question whether I could live happily on 23k after housing and utilities - the answer is "probably but I wouldn't have much in savings" - so I don't see why it's unfair of the OP to ask this question.

Some of us don't like local food that much and enjoy expensive overseas holidays!
