To move or not to move?

    Hi all,

I would like a bit of advice about life in HK please. I live in the UK with my partner who is from HK, and we plan on getting married and starting a family in the next couple of years. Recently we have broached the idea of moving back to HK to be near his family.

My only concern is that our standard of living would not be as high as it is over here, for both us and for our future children. Topics such as wages, housing, education, health care, and general cost of living are the main things I would need to compare to get a better idea of what moving to HK would mean for us!

He is a qualified civil engineer (soon to be chartered), while I work in accounts but only have quite low level qualifications (as i am still actually studying and will be for the next few years). Our mortgage is very small, and we run a car, socialise and live very comfortably on our joint incomes. I don't speak Cantonese, although he is trying to teach me :-)

Would anyone be able to give me some advice, or places I could read up and get a general idea of what i could expect from a move to HK please?

    Thanks

Do some searches on this site - the topic has been covered many times before.

Have you ever been to HK? Nothing beats first hand experience. Perhaps you should plan a holiday here.

Key considerations for me would be pollution, a lack of grass for kids to play on and the size of the country ie: if you want a holiday or weekend away you really need to leave HK as there is no where to go here so it does get a bit claustrophobic.

That's quite a broad question, but you might want to try reading Living and Working in Hong Kong by Rachel Wright or Culture Shock Hong Kong by Betty Wei and Elisabeth Li.
