Re buses .. The whole of HK is exceptionally well connected with buses. The worst areas (some outlying villages) 'only' have one bus per half hour ...for everywhere else one every 5-10 mins is normal to various places.
Also, many large estates (gold coast included) run their own private resident shuttles to central or nearest MTR etc.
    You'll be amazed.

Good plan. Places like Wan Chai can be a dream come true or a total nightmare depending on your personality. In short, it's a CROWDED area. Nothing in the US comes close to it in terms of population density. Well, Manhattan maybe but the sidewalks are still a heck of a lot wider there. As you work in Causeway Bay (another very crowded area), you may prefer to live further out to get some peace and quiet. Or not. Impossible to say without being here.

Refreshing change of attitude compared to the usual "sock allowance" crowd we normally see.

barnesc, you may also want to take a look at Tin Hau and Fortress Hill. They are the next two stops on the MTR after Causeway Bay on the blue line and provide a more residential type of environment.

In my humble opinion, I would not live in the New Territories. Yes, it may be a great area to live, but for someone new to town, it is not the place to live. Yes, I see that you're willing to commute 30 minutes or more, but I can tell you, the commute will get old and you will hate it. I don't know how to explain it, but HK is not Chicago or NY and to commute more than 30 minutes each day will tire you out quickly.

I guess what I am trying to tell you is to live closer to where you work during your first two years in HK even if it means paying more for rent. I know a lot of people (including yourself) may disagree with me, but from my experience when I first started work in HK during my early 20s and working late in the office till 10:00pm - 12 midnight, I was always grateful that I would be home in less than half an hour.

I would not live in NT being here in HK with my wife in Vancouver. But I looked at Tin Hau and Tai Hang and did not find what I could get in Sheung Wan which I posted on before. And Tin Hau and Tai Hang and Fortress Hill are way too far from the Feather Boa and Soiree. We know you are dying to hit those spots.

I've lived my first 3 years in HK in the NT and did not have any problem with that (and I was working late and I was partying hard) but as I said, we are all different...but I did enjoy my weekend by the pool facing the mountain or walking to the beach after a big night out while my friends living in Mid Levels or the likes just spent their day at home recovering
