i think you got to realize that hkd15k can only get you about 400sqft net (half a 3 room flat in Singapore) and it will be an old apartment, unfurnished.... most singles are paying about hkd12-15k for a 1bedroom/studio....the bedroom is deceptively small....checkout gohome or centadata for a reality check

most ppl in hk get accomodation allowance of at least hkd25k so it will be hard to get by on hkd45k.

HUH? I know people who pay around 7-8k for a 600sq ft place. Ok - so it's in the Gold Coast and not in Central or Midlevels, but there are plenty of places closer than here for 15k that are perfectly acceptable. And as for "most employers pay 25k?????" where on earth did you get that idea from? Most pay nothing.

I agree that Zergmei's comments indicate a very narrow base of experience - I'm paying 6K for a well-kept, 1 br 400' sq place in central Tuen Mun - it sounds like the utter ends of the earth if you live on HK island, but by either express bus or MTR average travel time from here to Central/ TST is no longer than that on many of the bus routes from the south side of the island.

And I - like many other singles I know here - find 20K a month plenty for a comfortable lifestyle.

Agreed - zergmei's comments are basically applicable to the gambling bankers, not to people who have real jobs adding real value. Many of those don't get any housing allowance, and $15K certainly gets you a quite reasonable place in a less central area.

i own some 650sqft apartments in kowloon side that are rented out for more than 15k....but the net efficiency is only 400sqft...

In singapore, apartment sizes are quoted NET (without corridors/liftlobbies/clubhouses).

Tuen mun /gold coast has some nice seafood just really far away if you work late in central and expect to take a taxi home....or if you need to take a taxi to work early in the morning...the green new territories cabs just can't go so far....

It's 20 mins in a taxi from Admiralty to Gold Coast. That's hardly "far". For those of you who have never left HK Island, they have these things called FREEWAYS (US terminology) or MOTORWAYS (uk terminology) in the NT which allow you to move around faster than the crawl along Connaught Road. Having said that, in the nearly 4 years I have lived here, I have found the need to take a taxi only about 5 times - usually after working late. Mostly because the buses will still only take about 40 mins later at night and the 20 min saving is just not worth it.

And just to put the record straight there are PLENTY OF RED TAXIs in the NT for those of you wishing to come into town in the mornings. Geesh. It's as though some folks in here never leave the island!

also, bankers don't get housing allowances anymore ...its precisely the ones who need it who are still getting it.....

btw, check out the apartments in sheung wan....700sqft gross/500sqft net are going for hkd27k and up for ground floor....
