Hi guys,
still thinking about this HK thing.
Worked out a bit of a budget and looked around the supermarkets to see what prices are, but what do you think it would be fair to budget for groceries and transport costs for two adults and a baby?

Really depends our your lifestyle, if you eat local and how far you have to travel.
for groceries, we pay around $6000 for 3 adults (includig our helper), a toddler, and a baby. this includes diapers for both children, but not formula, and dog food for 2 dogs.
most of the meat we buy is from the frozen meat shop in causeway bay (much cheaper!! i got t-bone steaks (usa) cut 1.5" thick and they worked out to be $43 each!!!). everything else is from park'n'shop or gateway in sheung wan.
this does NOT include eating out, which we rarely do, our helper is too good a cook to eat out! although when we do, we offer her the choice of coming with us (and ordering for herself) or staying home.

maybe this will help you to check it up![]()
I was just interested to see what people spend on average.
Where are you moving from? We match your family size and find we are spending more here than we did in the US. I don't have the numbers here, but I have them at home. We shop at Park-n-Shop, seldom eat out and do not have a helper.
meat (chicken, beef and lamb) from a butcher = HK500/month
vegetables & fruit from the vegetable market = HK300
grains, eggs, other dry food items from the grocery store = HK1000
lunch is eatten outside and one dinner each week is also eatten outside.
Transportation depends on where you are going and how you will get there bus, MTR, KCRC, taxi, private car.

We have been averaging US$234/month on groceries, which includes baby food/formula. That's going to be skewed to the high side because we buy alcohol from Park-n-Shop (wine, beer and spirits).
For transportation we are strictly bus and train; I cross into China maybe 10-15 times a month on the KCR and I am not spending US$65/month. It would be a lot less if I eliminated the trip to the border which is overly-expensive.
sleuth, that's only $1800 bucks!!
please tell me where you shop, i need to go there! diapers for us alone is about $600/month and when my son was drinking formula that was an additional $400/month or so!
