Congratulations, I'm an expat who recently moved into Lai Chi Kok at the beginning of the year also.

There is plentiful accomodation around here to suit your budget whilst remaining close to work - I would start your search in Cheung Sha Wan first and also look at Sham Shui Po. Be prepared for old buildings and sometimes not the nicest of surrounds but you should find something liveable.

Transport is plentiful as well as good quality local restaurants and markets. I've really enjoyed the last few months here settling in to the area.

Good luck, feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions.

I think this is possible.. I am also looking to work in HK and I found rents in outskirt areas such as Ma On Shan for $10,000 for a 2 bedroom apartment. So if you share with a roommate, I'm guessing it will be quite affordable. Btw, I'm having a hard time looking for jobs that doesn't require me to speak Chinese. Are you able to help me with that??

It wasn't easy - I tried both applying on line for jobs and also visiting recruiters in person whilst in HK on holidays. No luck with either - I was looking for IT Business Manager/Project Manager type roles but really my expertise is too specialised to a single industry it seems.

In the end I negotiated an internal transfer to get here.

I found this website helpful when looking for listings: Hong Kong Property, Apartments, Homes, Real Estate for Sale, rent and lease - Square Foot. Hope that helps!

I am in the same situation as you, It is definitely livable, I have been doing it for 2 years now, but don't expect a lot of entertainment as that eats into your salary quickly. Do not forget about taxes and MPF as that takes some money out of your 18K, but may not apply to you.

Expect minimal savings and social events 1-2 a week. Of course really depends what you do for social, drinking at LKF and hiking vary greatly and if you can live in a 100-200sq ft room.

It may be hard at first, the hardest part was adjusting to the room, but eventually you get use to it. Besides a smaller room means cheaper AC cost in the summer, and after a couple years in HK you learn to live without it and save on that as well.

I found Square Foot to be totally incorrect and out of date.

Be aware of the "advertising prices" made to lure you in.
