Good. Best of luck to you both in whatever you try next.

Thank you for listening. At least one or two people were saved from being scammed. BTW, this scammer should be caught. Apparently, the creature wants to suck as much cash from any willing victim. I believe a report to the concerned authorities would be worthwhile.

    Good on you OP.

One query though (I am not a native ES), why use "vary" instead of "Very"? Is this correct or just a typo?

It's not crazy, it's a scam. In the Philippines it's very common to pay a "fixer" to get stuff done. Perhaps, for example, you need to get a new passport - well if you use the normal process it might take ages or never get done. So you pay someone to "fix" the problem and they get your passport in less time. (not sure if my passport example is true, it's a general theme though). So - if you have a Filipina here in HK, and they are told that it's not possible to get a visa for waitressing but that they can "fix" this with money, they believe it because that's how it works in the Philippines. Then the fixer just disappears with the money, because as we know, HK is not the Philippines.

It's easy to see how this can happen, and very sad, and very lucky that the OP is a native English speaker who is capable of coming onto a forum and finding all this out. If you have no internet, only talk to friends who are also Filipinas, don't have a forum full of employers and lawyers and others with immigration experience, how do you know? Anyway - for once, looks like the scam was prevented before it went too far. Well done to the OP.

THese people are nasty folks. You don't report them unless you have nothing to lose and can make yourself scarce quick. GIven the OP's wife is already possibly working illegally, she has more to lose than to gain by reporting, especially given the racism in HK which will penalize her before it helps her.

There is, however, a support group for DH's which might help - PDLM used to link it regularly - that might be worth contacting. If anyone else has the link from an old post by PDLM, can they post it?
