Shipping my car over from UK

Does anyone know how much it costs to ship a car over from the UK to HK? What's involved? If no one knows, does anyone know where I can find out?

I know that many advocate about not driving in HK, but I used to live there and I used to drive =)

Buying a new car or even a second hand one is really expensive and I'm wondering if it's worth shipping mine over. It's a 2005 bmw x3 3.0i with a lots of options. Apparantley it'll cost me a ton to buy a new one =/

    Thanks

The question is begged, why would you need a car here unless you are living out in the sticks. I do and don't need a car but others have them.

If you can afford the high cost of shipping this car here AND the high parking / garaging charges then you must be choosing to live in a high cost area. Central, Island side etc etc .

Which again begs the question. Why need a car? In a place that has the transportation system in the world, as long as it doesn't involve driving a car.

    Intrigued !

    Amen to that!

You'd be crazy to even contemplate thinking of shipping your car over from the U.K, Sell your X3 and buy yourself a car over in HK if you really require one. Makes no financial sense at all for you to ship yours over.

Hmm, if it's really daft to ship it over then there's no point =P

I don't know, but I live for 6 years in HK, 3 without a car and 3 with. I just think that having a car and not need it is better than not having one and need it =)

    Thanks

You would be liable to a huge import duty on the car. Much better if you really want one is to buy one second hand here.

This was a great thread from before which may give you some answers, though without the steering wheel issue.
I think you will find that a 2nd hand car will be much cheaper here- especially if you add on the import tax as PDLM mentioned.

I looked into bringing our car over from Australia but found the import tax / first registration tax to be very high. Here's a link to the information:

    http://www.customs.gov.hk/eng/major_import_motor_e.html

I find 2nd hand cars in HK to be cheap compared to Australia (not sure about the UK). I'd sell your car in the UK and buy one here if you want.

After seeing this and being in a very cynical mood today ( no comments please ! ) seems to me this post is a bit " MMMMMMmmmm look what nice car I think I have ( Quote - with a lots of options ). Maybe my friends can look this place and see I am big success "

If he's been here before ( Quote - but I live for 6 years in HK, 3 without a car and 3 with ) he knows the score. Plus - a 3 series ????. Just a town car for the maid here.

Work harder and then ship back the Maybach 57S . Gold and Diamonds as standard so I read. Then everyone will know you have made it.

Looks like shipping a car over is not worth it from the sounds of it. Thanks very much for the advice!
