English speaking community in Tuen Mun

Hi all, my girlfriend and I have secured jobs in Tuen Mun, moving out August 15th from the UK. I've found a few in the other areas of NT but I was wondering if anyone knew of any sort of English-speaking community in the Tuen Mun area?

I'm looking forward to befriending locals and expats alike but it would be nice to mix with a bunch of English speakers to make the transition that much easier.

Does anyone know of any such thing?

    Thanks in advance!

There are expats living in and around Tuen Mun, the majority would be living in the Gold Coast area. Plenty of people to meet in the evenings and weekends around the plaza and beaches.

I recommend Gold Coast. Many locals and expats stay there. Many cathay pilots and cabin crew stay there. They have marina, restaurants, dry cleaner, small gym, tennis court, swimming pool and good selections of imported products in Marketplace (supermarket). There is frequent double decker bus to Tuen Mun Town Plaza which is 10 min away. U can take MTR from there too or can take small bus to Tsing Yi MTR (20 min travel time but small bus mostly full during prak hour) or take double decker bus to city (one hour travel time).

Oya Jaykay is right. They have beach too. Gold coast is quite far from city but it is the best thing u can get in Tuen Mun where the area is far from hustle&bustle of HK. At least you still can enjoy greens there rather than jungle concrete.

Plenty of expats of all nationalities in the Gold Coast (Sui Lam) area of Tuen Mun. It's about 2km from the city centre; 1km from the "edge" of Tuen Mun proper, on the coast. Tuen Mun is a great place to live and work. It's much cheaper than closer to Hong Kong Island, has everything you can possibly need but if you do want to go elsewhere, also very good transport connections.

In Gold Coast you have a bunch of options for accommodation - the Gold Coast residences - best facilities (particularly the buses) but not so great quality and more expensive; Aegean Coast - smaller units, good facilities, cheaper; Avignon - larger, newer, very expensive; and then many along the road further out that are cheaper and also good but further away from the shops and the restaurants.

Several people on Geo live there - myself, Beuze, Bryant English (if he returns to Geo) and a bunch of others. So ask questions in this thread or start another. Pls don't send us PM's!

As already noted, plenty of expats, speaking English and many other languages, mostly living in the Gold Coast area. When I lived in Trend Plaza (right in the centre of Tuen Mun), I was also quite surprised to find quite a number of expats there, although the "shoebox flat" lifestyle isn't nearly as conducive to meeting the neighbours as the more "villagey" one is.

For local Chinese people, Tuen Mun district is mostly (although this is changing slowly) a dormitory district for working class people - I suspect you'll find a lower percentage of residents who are comfortable communicating in English than you would in many other areas of Hong Kong.

Tuen Mun definitely has nice parts but definitely very China-ish. People here work a lot so finding friends is difficult. Locals english is quite bad and when you try to have a joke or conversation it is difficult. Easier to order food and say things like water etc but to have a real conversation, quite difficult.

Thanks very much for the replies everyone, really appreciate it! I was half expecting it to be a little less tourist-accommodating (even though I'm technically not a tourist!) so it doesn't worry me too much.

It's what you make of it after all, eh! I'm looking forward to it

I'm moving to Sui Hong on the 23rd August. This is just down the road so give me a shout if you fancy a beer or two.
