Yup was the year of the 'Big Freeze' in China and it filtered down to HK. I was on holiday here at the time and only had summer clothes (round the world ticket: Thailand, Aus, Fiji, USA) and had to go on a shopping free.

That's true - will have to get some space heaters as last winter the so-called heater embedded in the AC system didn't really work (as advertised, at least) and it's the nasty damp chill that made you feel warmer outside.

Yes, actually that's a good point. I did spend some days wrapped in a duvet on the sofa as our place was so draughty! Both places we've lived in so far were very poorly insulated.

I've been waking up cold over the past week or two, and it's August. My flat is like a fridge. I think it may be haunted!

Where will you be living? We lived on the southside right on the water and it was freezing last winter. I had both my kids in winter coats, hats, and gloves.

I walk through the street markets and they seem to be full of kids' clothes. Do you have to buy branded items?

The markets only seem to cater for small children or is there somewhere someone can recommend for a 135cm 7 year old? H&M is cheap but they seldom have his size in stock.

Yep, as soon as the temp dips below 20 (68 to you Americans) the North Face padded jackets are out on the streets

You don't need your ski jacket, but your 'cold fall' jacket from NY should suffice. There are quite a few days that have a chill in the air, and it is a 'damp' cold that can get under your skin a bit. A bit of layering is all you need really.

However, if you plan on visiting Beijing or going skiing in Japan or Korea during the winter, then bring your cold weather gear. You'll need it in those places.
