also if you ride the airport express, the direction sign says Tsing Yi, Kowloon, Hong Kong etc. There is no mention of the train going to just The Island station

Hong Kong pretty much refers to the entire SAR. I usually refer to Hong Kong Island as Hong Kong Island or Hong Kong side (and I was born and raised on "the island").

For me it depends on my location:

When inside the HKSAR "Hong Kong" means Hong Kong Island. At times "side" is added on to the end for no specific reason.

When outside the HKSAR "Hong Kong" means the entire territory.

How many people back in the USA even realize there is an entire territory? I bet a large portion of the world thinks HK is a city-state like Singapore or Monaco.

I tend to meet people more that think Hong Kong is a city in Japan.

Luckily for my sanity also I travel to other places besides the USA.

The kicker years back when I walked into Bank of America in Boston to transfer funds from US account to my HK bank account (a different bank). Once the paperwork was signed and processed the bank rep. gave my version of the documents and said your funds will be in your European account with 48hrs. I responded I wanted the funds to go to HK not Europe .... the rep. proceeded to correct herself by saying "yes to England - it's part of Europe." I said again I wanted my funds to go to Hong Kong - she replied yes Hong Kong the city in England. Finally, clarified the Hong Kong is in Asia a territory of China!

pmsl Alby...haven't we all got a great story like that from the States!

Mine went something along the lines of:

Q: So where are you from?

    Me: Melbourne, in Australia

Q: Wow, did you drive here? How long did it take?
