Yes, always had comments when I was in the ICC in West Kowloon. Weird though as it's closer from Central than Central to say Wan Chai. That is if you take the train.

Then when I moved the office to Langham Place in Mongkok it was alot more difficult to get people to come to the Kowloon!

In general talk they always talk about Kowloon as some weird place like they were on the mainland.

Kowloon to them is like Shenzhen is to us on Kowloon side.

Though this story is the mainland it is quite comical.

I remember when I was living in Beijing around 2005 and I meet some Consulate Australian staff at an after trade show drinks function. I remember one girl (mid 20's) was visibly distressed and unhappy. I inquired what's the matter and she replied that she had to go back home (to the embassy compound) as she has been out in China for more than 12 hours!! I laughed uncontrollably which distressed her even more.

elliee, it's not being rude to assume that the folks who live on the island "generally" have more money.... it's a fact. it is also a fact that those who live on the island do not "generally" like to go off the island, they don't see any need to, so they don't. they stay where they are. that's why so many expats (at least the hk island dwelling ones) have such a limited experience of hong kong. they ridicule those who choose to live in DB as living somewhere "un-hong kong" and yet, these very same people: live in the mid-levels, work in central and socialise in LKF....
I wish I could remember which poster it was but he lives in Mid-Levels and has been a member since 2007....saw him telling a newbie that he should prepare himself, there is no green space in Hong Kong....only concrete!! Probably not left Central in 6 years!!

Agree with the people that you will be totally fine on that salary even if you don't get a housing allowance.

But to put things in perspective, I work in finance, all expats sent out here in my company live on considerably more than that (counting our housing allowance) still some people feel they can't save much. These people have kids and spend 20k per month on food for the family and expect to live and eat like we did back in Europe. So it's definitely possible to burn 96k per month if you are not willing to adapt to HK way of life.
