Thumbs up UK-Based Digital Marketer Who Wants to Move to HK

    Hi,

    Just joined this forum!

I'm 28 and I currently work in Digital Marketing, a growing field here in the UK, and want to relocate to HK. I've been there once before and used to date a local from there who I am still friends with.

Doing what I do, I was wondering what the demand there for Digital Marketing is, and what my chances were for finding a job where I can get a sponsored visa. In London, a non-manager can get between 30-40k GBP and I was wondering what sort of wage I could expect for doing that job in HK and if I could live on that comfortably there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers!

    Chris

Nope. I'd have to get an employer sponsored visa... but was wondering what you guys thought the chance of me getting that was.

Presumably you don't speak Chinese... Do you think you'd be bringing unique skills which wouldn't already be available in the local population, since that's officially the main deciding factor as to whether you'd get a visa or not?

Well, many firms use digital marketing, including mine and it is very normal here, of course...

, and what my chances were for finding a job where I can get a sponsored visa.
I honestly believe that your chances are slim. Loads of people here doing e-marketing and e-commerce already...

I would guess less than half that..

and if I could live on that comfortably there.
    If you like noodles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Your welcome! That said, good luck!

We have employed digital marketers on sponsored visas before. However, our business language is predominantly English therefore that is the unique skill to enable us to sponsor a visa - native level written English combined with a number of years experience in digital marketing and ideally sector experience.

I'm pretty sure salaries in marketing other than at senior director / strategic levels are quite a bit lower than in the UK. However, so is tax and the cost of living can be if you choose it, so you may still be better off.

I suggest you come on a fact finding / networking trip here, meet all your contacts and recruiters and see what your chances are.

    Thanks for your reply!

I don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese; I am British and a native English speaker.

I have been working in Digital Marketing for five years (three of which were in a fortune 500 insurance company) and have worked on some high profile industry campaigns and websites with large London-based agencies. Would that kinda stuff count as unique skills there?

    Yes, I love noodles aha.

Thanks for the link. I have already done a lot of searches and been looking for jobs on HK-based sites but I wanted a more qualitative opinion from someone who's already there and knows what they're talking about rather than looking at stuff online.

Thanks. Any and all info about this will definitely help!

Thanks for your reply! Very helpful (:

Good idea and encouraging that I now know that it's possible!

I have five years non-managerial experience marketing and three years in the insurance industry and have worked on high profile campaigns including a UK-wide TV campaign and numerous website redesign projects amungst other things.

I am White, British and therefore a native English speaker. Could this count as a unique skill along with my experience?

Do you know of any specialist recruitment agencies that I could sign up to?

    Thanks again,

    Chris

ethnicity is not even unique skill, plus, plenty of brits, Canadian, yanks, aussies here.

in regards to british aspect, there is a significant number of british born Chinese here ( hence, native English speakers)

why not consider asking around fortune 500 companies for links to HK jobs as your best luck of finding a job, BTW, do you have a degree as well?

alternatively, if you willing reduce your wage request, do a tefl course in UK and start afresh, native speaking English tutors are in demand and eventually become a real teacher with pdge if want decent wages
