Lightbulb New Book on moving to HK

    Hey everyone,
I'm currently writing a book on moving to HK from the perspective of someone in the financial services industry. I'll be releasing it as it's written via leanpub, starting next month. If you'd like to be updated (and get the first chapter for free) you can sign up over at xxxxxxxx

I'm really keen to have stuff that people will find relevant so will be going through this forum to look for repeating questions, but if you're about to move and have some questions let me know and I'll answer and include them.

    Thanks!

    Hold on

You're getting questions and answers from a free forum and charging others for it?

    Plagiarism or what.

Well isn't this the usual list of concern:

    1. Finding a place to live (for a mid-to-senior ranked financial industry professional, it's likely the company will be paying for the rent...so the only question is where to live).

    2. Schooling for your kids...if you have them...(again, the $$$ question will likely be taken care of by the employer so the only question is trying to land a spot at a international/ESF school...but good luck with that).

    3. Residency and travel issues (i.e. visa requirements to go to XXX country from HK, duration of stay in HK)

    4. Eating out/nightlife (i.e. which restaurant is good, which to avoid, clubbing and partying, but that's not for everyone).

    5. Dealing with the cranky folks on geoexpat...well this isn't a necessity...

Man you guys are cynical. I know when I moved out here I would've loved for a book like this to help me with it (hence why I'm writing). I've got the full outline for the book as it is, but I'm just trying to be helpful; if people have specific, perhaps less obvious questions, that I could help answer and then share that with other people the don't know about forums like this.

Is there actually a market for a book like this? There are some good books out there on Moving to HK already. What's so special about a move for someone in financial services?

I should add....I moved here as someone in financial services.

I didnt need a book. Luckily years in the relocation trade and moving 100s of exec's around gave me enough knowledge. Maybe I can teach you a thing or 2 for your book....but I ain't cheap.

The problem is it will soon become outdated.

@Bibbju this is why I'm doing it via leanpub, see if people are interested before spending a year of my life writing the whole thing! Definitely think there's scope for something a bit more tailored as most the books I read when coming over were very high level and clinical. Keen for something a bit more persona.
@Trance haha, you probably could! Trying to keep costs down I'm afraid.
@usehername Certainly a risk, but again, using leanpub you can update the book regularly and everyone who bought it get's the updates for free. We'll see. Maybe a terrible idea but worth a go!

Good luck. Personally it's not something I would have paid for simply because there is so much already out there and online. But no doubt others will be interested.
