I like how this thread has turned into a sort of game on how to best maximize living on 5K HKD a month. It's a huge contrast to some of the threads and posts from people about how they think their 30k-40k monthly rent is cheap :P

It all depends on personal circumstances.
Dressing up and getting to your workplace every day alone
eats up a lot of money
I've found that HK can be extremely cheap if you live in NT (or have cheap rent by any other means, like OP), unless you go out drinking or eating in expat places. Admittedly I'm doing that tonight though, and did it a shitload over Christmas.
The first step is admitting you have a problem, right?

Hi guys! Latest update, I'm heading over to hk this month and will be staying near tsuen wan area. Any cheap and good food there?
It is doable, but really not much.
Basic and rough rundown:
Telephone + internet $250/month
Lunch $40 x 7 times a week = 280 x 4 = 1,120
Dinner $60 x 7 times a week = 420 x 4 = 1,680
Travel $12.7 x 10 times a week = 127 (assuming you travel from Tsuen Wan to Central) x 4 = 508
Per month you will be approximately spending $3,558. This doenst even include the ocassional drinks, snacks, laundry, and travelling at weekends.
