5k HKD a Month in Hongkong

    Hi all!

May i ask whether 5k HKD is enough for survival in HKG kowloon area? ETC. Phone, Internet, Transport, Meals & cigarettes.

I've got a sponsorship from my employer to upgrade my skills in HKG. Will be staying there for a whole year before heading back. Accommodation & electric bills are already sponsored as some may ask.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I suppose it's possible but you won't have much of a life with that kind of budget.

If you give up cigarettes, it's doable, but not much in terms of a social life.

After say your mobile phone bill and Internet, you looking around 150 per day. No fancy restaurants, eat local or peep meals by getting ingredients from wet markets or offers.

It will be very tight though.

I would say survive but not live. Do you have a visa?

Have you checked what accomodation they are providing, it might be only a dorm.

    Thanks for the reply guys!

How much does the internet cost per month? I can do without a phone but definitely not internet. I could maybe get a prepaid card for my phone though.

As for meals i guess i'm ok with their local food but roughly how much does a plate of rice with maybe some chicken or pork cost? Not planning to cook cause i know nuts about cooking LOL! maybe instant noodles on some days will be something that'll consider.

I've applied for a training visa. So i guess i'm not able to work there. As for accommodation its a serviced apartment ( I'll be staying alone ). Don't know exactly where yet though.

Cigs will kill your budget depending on how much you smoke per day, average cost of a packet is $50HK.
Mobile phone you can get the cheap plans for less than 100per month, Internet around 200-300 per month depending on where you live. Stick to MTR (underground subway) as transportation to work.

    5k Is doable.

If you hunt around, you'll find meals for you mentioned for around $35 a pop, more if they are in a more commercial busy area.

Oh wow! the price of cigs are close to the cost in singapore although cheaper. I thought the prices are like around $30hk lol.

the prices of the phone and internet seems ok. so i've got roughly around 4k to spend on my daily meals & transport.
