Smile Moving to Tai Po area with Todlder

    Hi
We’ll be moving to Tai Po area within next couple of months due to my husband job. I’ve no idea how this part of Hong Kong would be. I’ve been in Lamma Island for 3 years. I’ll be doing full time master at HKU starting this September. I guess travelling would be a real pain for me. I’d like to hear more on apartment rent, shopping, kindergarten, play area, and public transportation. We are with 1 year old baby… I am so grateful for you guys for helping giving me any advices here. Thanks very much ……

which part of taipo, it's a large area

Taipo to hk uni takes around 1.30-45hrs ( taipo market to east tst - 35mins, east tst to tst walkway -10-15 mins, tst to sheung wan 35-40min) then 10-15mins on tram

but by mid of 2015, there will be hk university station as extension of hk island will be completed, expect taipo market to hk university station around 1.15mins

But by mid 2020, the shatin to central line completed, expect around 1hour.

I used to live in Tai Po, your travel time will depend a lot on your proximity to the KCR / bus station. Its a nice enough area with plenty of stuff to do (I love the Tai Po Waterfront Park).

Look out for Mini-van: Green top & Red top (16-seater)

If you haven't signed any lease for apartment, or you still have choices, then keep an eye out for the SURROUNDING streets.... Keep a look out for streets/alleys where there are mini-van (16 seaters), then live near these vans. They usually are near local wet-markets.
the Red-top vans tend to be more efficient

HKU is on Pokfulam, but the next neighborhood is SaiYingPun and ShekTongTsui, a more mature area that is well served by these mini-vans. I am at ShekTongTsui, and I can get to Shatin via these mini-vans in 30minutes, and "walking" to HKU takes 10minutes of riding up a series of the escalators, and I will hit the HKU West Gate.

    So your journey could mean:
    Mini-van : 35 minutes from home(Shatin) to ShekTongTsui
Walk : 10 minutes from STTsui to HKU West Gate

Then add whatever time you need to work your way to the faculty/classroom... you can make it door-to-door in less than one hour.

Alternately, there is a series of GREEN-top vans that pickup from HKU East Gate, that get you to the MTR(cross harbour KCR HungHom) in twenty minutes, which then allows you to get on the trains... so living near the MTR/KCR stations can be a good choice.

If you need more info, please PM me, I can take you for field trip to see the van routes available for you.
