Anyone moved to HK from NY? Trying to estimate my relocation fee.

I'm planning to move to HK for work and want to see how much it'll cost me to ship my belongings so I can negotiate some relocation fee with my company.

I won't be moving any furniture. Just some boxes - maybe 20 boxes at 10 lbs each? I'm totally guesstimating this. I was thinking about just using the postal service, but wanted some input based on your experiences.

I'm thinking $2,000 should be enough but really don't know... Thanks!

Seven Seas has an estimator for boxes. You can price out a few options.

You can also consider "excess baggage" on your airline. Most airlines let you take quite a few bags, for a fee, but the fee is sometimes cheaper then shipping the same volume/weight via other methods. You just end up at the airport with quite a few bags.

Remember that flats are generally small in Hong Kong (or very expensive if spacious). Also, Hong Kong is hot or warm most of the year, with a week or so perhaps cool to cold by NY standards. So, think about what clothing you want to bring.
