Oh trust me it was COLD in Fan Ling! and I'm from Toronto Canada. I made sure I brought back all my thick fleece hoodies in preparation for this winter.

lowlight, i'm surprised that being from Van, you'd call HK winter 'cold as hell'...Van sees a few days below zero in the winter...and venture anywhere else in Canada between November and March and you'll probably have experienced 'cold as hell' at a whole other level

-10C is where I think it starts getting nippy... below -25C starts getting uncomfortable and i would descrive -40C as cold as hell... Mind you, I'll take -10C dry and sunny over 5C and rainy like Vancouver from November to March... If the summer in HK sucks, the winter in Vancouver is even worse...head for the hills to get away from the rain. Perspective is a funny thing

yes, but as discussed before... when you live in canada, where i'm from, EVERYTHING is insulated and heated. VERY different here.

i used to sleep at "home" with my window open 365 days per year, even in the -40C weather and loved it. but i had the luxury of central heating and was able to warm up simply by leaving the bedroom and entering the livingroom...not so simple here.

Van sees days that are below zero, but as soon as you go home, it can be a nice toasty 22 degrees as long as you want. That's not the case here, where there is no insulation. The concrete walls just leech what little heat is being generated by our bodies/electronics/heating devices.

When talking about outdoors, Vancouver is definitely colder in the winter. But as far as living conditions go, HK has tougher winters.

It's colder in the autumn too(compared to HK winters)... last october I was in Vancouver before i came to HK. It was 8C and rainy, night time probably 5C... had to wear jacket plus sweater when I was outside. But once inside, it's all good with central heating

Also, most people drive over there, so the coldest part of the day is the 5 minutes or so when you first get in your car and wait for it to warm up. Not much time is actually spent out in the cold, really.

yes, true... but many over there have remote control starts for the car, so you don't even have to wait inside the car for it to warm up... you start the car, drink your last cup of hot chocolate, then head out to a nice warm car!

One more thing I thought of: HK people tend not to be able to walk in a straight line. Walking behind someone, they will be zig-zagging all over the place, usually while talking on the phone, making it difficult to get by them.

Oh speaking of phones in public, that opens up a whole other can... But then this would just become a knit-picking thread and I REALLY don't think we need ANOTHER one of those

I can't believe some people think a Vancouver winter is better than a HK one. It's my favorite time of the year! Never what I'd say about Van winters... I'll take 100 of the winters here over the wet, slushy, dreary Van winter. One of the worst places in the world to be IMHO in the winter and one of the best in the summer. I'll take -10C and dry over -5C and wet any day of the week.

In HK, winter is generally sunny and between 10-20C ... Paradise for me if we took away the pollution
