You need to provide much more details than what you have provide above, which is nothing, except that you are planning to move here and you have a kid.
Have you got a job here?
    What is your visa status?
What would be total monthly income?
How much you plan to spend on rental?
The costs for schools, apartments, vary depending upon the size and new/old building and area one lives in. It would be very difficult to tell you anything unless you provide the information.

Sorry, but what is '2 bhk'? And '5 standard'?

There is no average rental, as it depends on the location, size, condition, age, etc.

This may give you a broad overview of schools in Hong Kong, assuming your child does not speak Chinese: Education for non-Chinese speaking children

    2 Bedroom and Primary 5 or grade/year 5.

Getting a spot in an English medium local school mid year will be very very tough.

    Thanks!

To the OP, you'll either be looking at a apartment or a single floor in a village house (typically 3-storeys high).

    Where will you be working?

    Hi

Schools first, then a place to live.

    Seriously.

The school situation, if you are looking for an English-language school, is considerably difficult. You may have a very hard time finding a school place in an English-language school at any price, let alone one that is low cost. You need to be doing some research into English-medium schools and then get on the phone to speak to the admissions office and see how long the wait list is for grade 5. For some private international schools the wait list is measured in YEARS!

    Seriously.

As such, recommendations on where to live, at this point, are somewhat moot. We can name a dozen areas that might have property that suits you, but if your school is a one and a half hour commute each way then it just might not be practical.

Here is another list to consider from this site's school section:

Smile planning to move to hk

Tin Shui Wai is a good suggestion. Serious. I live there - not by choice of course. When it comes to transport I would rate it better than Lamma. You can be in Central in less than an hour by the west rail line - no waiting. Lots of open space (by HK standard, of course). More affordable rent here. One surprise - the air is not as polluted as you would find in Tung Chung or Causeway Bay, despite its proximity to the Chinese border. One thing you have to adjust to (or put up with) - it's not Hong Kong PROPPER. You'd feel like living in a part of China.

tin shui wai is that cheap, places like sea ranch is reported to be much cheaper, sha tau kok is cheap, but even more remote places with limited public transport could even cheaper, ie kwu tong, chiu keng, ping kong

Yeah, its gonna take forever to get to Central or just HK island in general if you live in Sha Tau Kok. Better just live in Lamma (or if that is too expensive-try Cheung Chau) instead.
