    Surviving in HK

I'll be moving to HK on a salary of HKD 21 000 per month, and I don't have housing allowance. I'm just wondering if it is enough to rent an apartment and survive in HK.

What sort of lifestyle are you looking for? It's enough to survive, but probably not enough to live in an expat area and go to expat restaurants (except the odd special occasion). Small accomodation that is a little bit of travel away from work and mostly home cooked or local food, you will be fine.

yup, many locals live on a lot less than that. it depends on what lifestyle you want. some spend more than triple that on rent. so long as you're happy to live within that budget, rent a unit in a not so flash block and eat/cook with local produce, you should be ok. If you have hopes of living a high life and or sending a lot of cash home, you might be in for a suprise. it also depends where you are from and how you are used to living.

My office is located in Wanchai but I don't mind living slightly further away. Preferably it should be less than a 30 min commute to work. I'm from Singapore so I don't think it should be that much of a difference in my living standards. How much would you traditionally spend on groceries? And also, is food expensive in Wanchai?

food is much the same in most places, it's the type of restaurant that varies. If you are from Singapore you will probably be fine - it's us westerners who struggle more on just asian food!

Re accomodation - You should be able to find something within 20-30 mins of Wan Chai for under 10k, if you shop around.

You should be fine. Not maybe as fine as with 4k SG$ at home, but reasonably fine. Imagine a nice but tiny (really. less than 35sqm) 1br unit for 9k or so and a commute like Clementi to City Hall. I live on quite a bit less as a student in the New Territories and it works fine.

    That's OK!

I live in Sheung Wan, 3 MTR stations from Wan Chai and I pay 8500 for my rent.

I guess you can find cheaper if you go more east (Kennedy town) and can still commute with the tram until Sheung Wan.

    You should be fine!

My girlfriend just got a 475 sq ft apartment in Kwai Chung (Kwai Fong MTR) for $5500. It's about 30 minutes train ride to Central. So about 35-40 min. to Wan Chai

Just a respectful correction: some "Westerners" struggle with eating only "Asian" foods.

keep in mind though that you need about 3.5 months for deposit to rent a flat.
