    Budget for two !!!

    Hi all.
Once again and hopefully for the last time we are trying to establish some sort of budget.
Its just the two of us, my wife and myself. We are not very demanding, just like to enjoy the occasional dinner, and nice home cooking.
Thinking of staying in South Lantau for about 30K rent a months and hopefully another 20K would cover that day to day doings.
With the odd bit of fun being had, how does 60K a months sound for a normal not over the top budget ?
Any input of people in similar positions would be great ?
The reason I am asking is, if we can not save money we might as well stay where we are.

Thanks again for your input !!!

Well, for a data point, we are a family of 4 and get by fine on ~$25k after major outgoings (i.e. rent, utilities and school/nursery fees).

Thanks - do I understand right ? 25k a months after rent and utilities are paid ? That is what I would sort of budget for. I guess maybe for two of us 20K could be reasonable.

Considering that low paying jobs in HK are about 10K/month and entry level jobs for university graduates are around 20K, you won't be suffering. HK is the kind of place where you can spend little if you eat more like a local, cook at home and do inexpensive activities like going to the beach and hiking. You can also spend a ton if you eat out/go out in flashier digs and try to keep up with the Joneses. Running a car which is totally unnecessary is another example of something that would cost you a fair bit. Personally, not including rent I spend on average less than 10K per month even with private club membership, playing golf and eating out a couple of times per week and the occasional trip.

I was looking at some prices to play golf and it seems its like 2000 plus dollars per round. Thats why I was planning on leaving the clubs at home !!! So if you get by on 10K how can you afford to play golf ?

A car would probably be necessary on South Lantau.

Naturally, a lot depends on your lifestyle preferences, but I’d say 60K budget for 2 would be enough.

I recall a fairly recent thread on here that came to a general consensus (well sort of) that a small family would be fine on a total income of around 90K / month. Given your budget I’d guess you are on a fairly similar income level, so without kids you should be fine.

    Totally doable.

Just move to the Gold Coast. Rent is cheaper, no car needed, and Tuen Mun provides plenty of cheap eats/market shopping/etc.

You can easily live on 40-50K, save even more, and retire earlier. The only downside is the commute, but I assume if you plan to live South Lantau, then that's not a huge concern.

Will be working at the airport. We like South Lantau because of the openness of the place. It seems like open country side compared to some of the high density places. I think thats the only place I want to live in HK.
