Thank you for your detailed response. I didn’t think supply would get remission on fees but do all full time staff, regardless of whether they were hired overseas or in Hong Kong get at least a discount? Btw in Saudi no one needs a male relative to escort them places. Else how would women get to work? But I get that I would have more freedom to jump on the MRT. I just really miss driving! It’s the 1 thing I really really hate here! I’ll maybe take the advice here of looking for somewhere on the Island and then it won’t be too far for him and I guess plenty schools on the Island I can work if vacancies arise. Are there any quirks to renting here unique to Hong Kong? In Middle East we need to pay a year upfront which luckily is covered by the company but pain if not!

Don't think it makes much difference to most international schools whether they hire you overseas or in HK wrt benefits package (albeit you won't get relocation/removals/temp accommodation as you would already be here).

My wife (currently resident in HK) just accepted a teaching job - her benefits package includes a significant discount on school fees.

That’s really good to know. I’ve been struggling to find an example of that. Here in the Middle East you either get everything or just a salary (and a lower one that those hires overseas.)

HK has a small land area and a population of over 7 million. If everyone had a car, it would ... well, it's just not possible! The public transportation is great and very liberating. The commute with the ferry from DB is smooth and nice, because you get a seat and quiet time, so you can study or work on something with a laptop/phone during that time, which is much more pleasant that an MTR or even bus ride at peak times. Definitely have a look, and I hope you can be more open to not having a car, because there just isn't space or even clean enough air for more cars! It's really a different lifestyle here.

I suggest you to stay on the Island first, somewhere between Causeway Bay and Kennedy Town. Rent in a serviced apartment for 2-3 months, so you stay flexible, can get a feeling for the neighbourhoods and socialize.

International schools are all over Hong Kong, so you might end up in places such as Tuen Mun, Tai Po or South Side.

Having a car is at least from a financial point of view not smart, as just parking in your place and at your workplace could easily cost you HKD6,000 a month.

All the best and you will have a good time here!

The tolls can add up a bit and traffic on certain routes suck.

A lot of SK/CWB folks just drive to East Point City car park and make use of the park and ride MTR deal, and train it onto the Island from Hang Hau. From personal experience, I found this way to be a lot easier, not to mention time & cost efficient. If the OP can rent around Pik Sha Road CWB, it's pretty handy to East Point City from there.

Loads of good advice here so thank you for taking the time. I’ll definitely consider DB and a few of the areas on the Island as suggested. I might have to change my mindset on the car. I’m desperate to drive
