Depends entirely on your needs and circumstances. There is insurance for hospitalisation, critical illness, cancer, just doctor visits etc.
How old are you and does anyone currently depend on you? Also, what salary are you expecting?
I am 25, I will be expecting 22,500 HKD a month. My company will cover me for 20 private GP visits and 5 specialist visits per year. And I can use the government clinic like a HK citizen.
No one is dependent on me.
I have to take medication for mental health, anti-depressants. I was told I need travel insurance but I’m not sure what to look for in a policy
Travel insurance won't cover you in HK - generally not beyond 30 days of departure, and generally not if you're no longer resident in wherever you bought it.
It's really a "how long is a piece of string" question. public hospitals work when you need them, but are a bit gross if you're coming from the west. Guess it also depends if your meds are expensive and currently free where you're living.
Most self funded policies don't allow you to claim for the first three months and won't cover anything pre-existing for the first year. They are also a bit expensive. Mine is around 3k/month for inpatient and critical illness.
You may want to ask your employer who provides the group policy and look at boosting that.
Here are is a list of resources and organisations which may be helpful: https://hongkongfp.com/2016/06/26/hk...-in-hong-kong/
This page lists some of the free government services (try to ignore the use of old terminology which may not be so acceptable in the western world)

My employer told me to purchase a years travel insurance...
Year long travel insurance in hk will cover your travel outside of hk for up to 100 days per trip (the Hsbc one at least). Are you traveling for work? You cannot get travel insurance to move to hk. Hk public hospitals will cover you, you are young, I wouldn’t worry about it unless you have some family health issues to be concerned about.
I’m moving over there to work teaching English and I believe there’s a macau trip involved so maybe that’s why
- will you have a working visa issued to you before you arrive?
- If not, will you be working here while your visa is under process and then going to Macau to activate it?
