Long long can my savings last in hk?

Planning to work in China for the experience. Will go to hk to stay (hk res status) as well as look for a job. I am single male 33yrs old. Mechanical engineer trained with 5 yrs exp on mechanical design. I have 150K HKD.

Assuming i rent a single room with internet access over there, keep my expenses low. Get a prepaid card, only travel to interview and networking events. How long can my savings last?

At least a year, probably 18 months. But that's with no life at all.

Wow, u are fast........anyway, that mean living on 8000~12500 HKD per month. What kind of room is recommended for me to rent in this case? rental? location? Any kind souls have such experience?

Also, is the rental market flexible to do a 2 month up-front? Seem to read that a 3.5 month up-front is required as an industry practice. I believe that everything is negotiable.

It really depends on where you want to live. The further north you are the cheaper it is (basic rule of thumb....). You can live in a little room close to central for approx 6k a month according to some people here. Or you can rent a floor of a village house for less than 3K close to the border. Shared accommodation is also a thought.

You can get a 100-150 sf room on HK island for less than $5,000. These places are usually found in the very small, very local agents.

pretty much 3.5 months is standard. two month's deposit and first month's rent... 1/2 month for agent. if you don't use an agent, then you save that 1/2 month.
