Asians in the Gov't NET Scheme?

    Greetings,

I'm a licensed secondary school teacher in Canada and have been teaching EFL in Korea the past 2 and a half years. I have TESOL certification as well as the standard B.Ed and B.A. I'm looking into making a switch into HK for 2011 for the Gov't NET Scheme and will have 3 and a half years of experience under my belt by then. I feel I've got the basic requirements covered (maybe I don't?)

Anyhow, I'm not sure if my Chinese background (HK born, emigrated at 10 months old) will work against me. Seems like a silly question, but I know where I am now, Korea, being Asian has been somewhat of a barrier and have been lucky with the decent jobs I've gotten. Is HK similar in their wariness of hiring "non-white"?

I'd love to spend a few years back out in the motherland and reconnecting with some family members while earning a decent wage. I'm just not sure if my HK Residence Card will be a barrier to employment.

    Appreciate any feedback!

    Cheers

There are plenty of teachers of Asian ethnicity in the NET scheme so in theory it isn't an issue. Having said that, I know the previous English Panel Chair at my school loved the fact that I was blonde and blue eyed - and as such I was paraded out for parents to see at every available opportunity!

Being Asian certainly won't hinder your application tho. Native speaker proficiency is what they're looking for.

    Hey Hi..

Would like to know from where you obtained the International Teaching License, as even I am a successful EFL teacher in my country with 3 years experience, with B.Ed /TEFL and PYE certification and degree.

But employers here dont require licensure, I was planning to applying for Hong Kong SNET scheme soon...any suggestions in this regard? would really appreciate!
