    Japan To Hong Kong

Moving to Hong Kong after beeing in Tokyo for 10 years. During this time I have acquired quite a lot of cool stuff. Pride of place would have to go to my 6 month old 42 inch LED HD TV.

Can I ask, am I going to be able to get a convertor to run that in HK?

Add to that a vintage Thorens turntable and vintage amplifier and speakers.

I have seen one or two threads on here talking about toasters, irons, hair-rollers, etc.

But what about massive 'mid-life crisis' style TV's the size of queen-size bed and 0's analogue home audio equipment?

I might actually call the move off if I can't bring them with me.

They mean that much to me

You can get any number of transformers and power units to step down the 220V to 110V. They won't look pretty, but they'll do the job. I assume your TV is multi-system PAL/NTSC?

For the small stuff that isn't multi-voltage capable you might be better off dumping it and getting new stuff here.

Yep the TV is multi-system and plays any kind of DVD through my Korean I play any region DVD player so flipping from PAL to NTSC is okay.

I would sell it but I'll be luck to get 50% of the cost back people don't buy 2nd-hand over here either. That's if I'm lucky and it's only 6 months old so I'm pained to not give it a run out in HK.

I take it these transformers are boxes and not a travel plug type affair?

Told the missus to bin the blender

Yes they are. Up to about 50W power consumption you can get things that look a bit like phone chargers and up to about 150W like laptop power supplies, but your TV is probably about 250-300W, which requires a box type thing. Something like this:

    (From here: http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad...m_300wconv.htm )

    Or the 500W version: http://www.goldenshop.com.hk/AI-trad...m_500wconv.htm

most thoren turntables have external transformers, check your one for voltage, if it's 120/110v, then change it with a 240v one with thorens hk distrbutor

You really should try to sell your TV in Japan if you can. I sold mine in the metropolis classifieds (free online ad) and got back much more than 50%.

You really dont want the hassle of a transformer, shipping charges, etc. Those transformers are really bulky and must not be very energy efficient.

Also, Japan uses ISDB-T standard which is different from Hong Kong's DMB-T/H standard. So in other words, the tuner wont work and its basically just a giant monitor and you will need to go out a buy a set top box to watch any local TV.

Also, I am surprised it is multi-system NTSC/PAL capable. Most TV's in Japan are not. They are only NTSC. Did you buy an international model? If you bought a local Japanese model, I would be very surprised that it is multi-system.

Finally, 42 inch TV's are very cheap here these days. Even some cable TV and internet companies here give you a free 42 inch TV or other gifts like this just for signing a 2 year contract with them.

So really if I was you, I would sell the 6 month old TV and then get another here. You can look in the classifieds here and get a 6 month old TV here and probably come out even.

Shipping charges are based on weight, now ?

I thought they only gave a rats about cubic volume ?

Weight by air, cubic volume by sea. More or less.
