    Teaching Art in HK?

    Hello!

Short question: Would it be possible for me to teach art in HK?

Here’s a brief overview of my education/experience/life situation:
    -BA in English
-Certified to teach Art K-12 in PA & NJ (I have only to defend my thesis and would also have a MA in Art Education…have been putting it off because it prices me out of most entry-level art position here in the states.)

-Have been substituting for nearly 2 years (day to day and long-term).
    -Did JET for 2 years.
-My boyfriend’s family is from HK and he will be working for the family company. We will be married before we make the move in 1-2 years.

Slightly longer questions: Considering your knowledge of the HK education system…
    1. Would finishing my MA make me more marketable or would the qualification not matter?
    2. If I can’t teach Art, must I get a TESOL or CELTA in order to teach English on the NET scheme?

    Thank you for your help!

    Thank you for the responses!
Most likely we will be living relatively close to Central. I've been looking at apartments near Olympic but need to do more lurking research!
My MA focus was on using art to teach ELL so I like the idea of opening a school and developing an art-based curriculum but I'm not sure on the logistics of being a small business owner...

For NET: would it be better for me to get the TESOL at a uni in the US rather than in HK?

That sound fascinating.....do you have any links to information about that?

Hmmm....I wouldn't 'overthink' it to be honest, you could start with a single classroom....I'm very sure there's a lot of interest, I'm interested!!

bryant.english: Agreed! Especially for visual and kinesthetic learners I think art could hold a lot of promise. Here's an article...

I'm thinking I should go for the TESOL...do you agree?

bryant.english: I tried to reply with a link, but it looks as though it didn't go through. I will PM you a link to an article about Art/ELL. Also, if I were to consider starting a class, would you recommend I teach in a learning center in HK first?

    Thank you funfest!

I would be interested in doing something with Art/ELL, I'd at least like to learn more. I have a centre in Tuen Mun and we're looking at doing some things in Wanchai and Shenzhen in the next few months.

I look forward to your PM.

Teaching in centres is a good idea to get a feel for local culture/expectations and so on, yes........I learnt a lot about what not to do...
