Colonial legacy brainwashed Hong Kong's students to denounce Beijing?

...Shying away from modern Chinese history, British colonial education woefully made most Hong Kong people suffer from a national amnesia. Nor do the young people who mostly grew up after the 1997 handover have a first-hand and accurate knowledge of colonial history.

It's a disgrace that some anti-Chinese bloggers and commentators have exploited this collective amnesia in pursuit of their de-sinofication. Following in Wang Jingwei's footsteps, they recently embarked on distorting and even cooking up Hong Kong colonial history to re-invent a bond with such outsiders as the British....

It is naive and quixotic for the anti-Beijing radicals to believe that, by sanctifying colonial rule will they gradually sever Hong Kong's ties with China. Like Wang Jingwei, those who brainwash our youngsters with invented memory are on the wrong side of history. Those who forget traitors' history will doom to repeat it.

Hrmmm... "Those who forget traitors' history will doom to repeat it," eh?

This article hit the net this morning and is written by Mr. CHAN, Wai Keung, a lecturer from HK Polytechnic University and Councillor from Yau Tsim Mong District.

The man has published multiple academic articles on Chinese and British History, was a professor at the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Hawaii, and was even a Scouloudi Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London.

It's safe to say he has an educated opinion. Anyone else have an informed opinion on the topic?

Interesting that it's in The China Daily. A good independent newspaper......

The writer is just clutching at any snippets of information to try and prove a point.

I'm sure it is true to an extent that people look at British colonialism with rose tinted glasses, but when you compare anything with Chinese politics it's bound to happen that way!

    Nope, not safe to say.
    Au contraire.

It is certainly safe to say he has an educated opinion.

I had to read it two or three times, but I think he is making a very valid point. He is denouncing propaganda, and the manipulation of history. He points his fingers squarely at the bloggers who may or may not be distorting the truth to their own ends.

If there was more pro-China propaganda in the article I'd take him for a 'mouthpiece,' but there isn't.

He doesn't point out the obvious, but how could he and get this published in this medium?

It's MacLehose's wishful thinking that so long as Hong Kong's development of different aspects overtook the Chinese mainland, the Beijing government would be overwhelmed and become feeble in the negotiations. Of course, history has proven him wrong.
Hongkong's 'development of different aspects' is the only thing holding back the Party from doing whatever it wants. Which proves MacLehose is right.
