Speech Therapist Needed - Accent Reduction (American)

    Hi,

I am currently working in Hong Kong. I have been speaking English since I was little, but still have an accent. I would like to work with a speech therapist who specializes in American accent. Please let me know if you know anyone or PM me. Thanks

    Best,
    John

What exactly are you trying to achieve? You have an American accent and want to get rid of it, or you have some other accent and want an American one?

I'm not an American but I am guessing there are several American accents.

Would that be standard East Coast, West Coast, or half way between?

I'm sure in Hong Kong there will be someone specialising in this. Have you tried googling 'accent reduction Hong Kong'? Maybe throw in an American at the end and you might get some links to research.

As this is an expat site, not many will be wanting to lose their foreign accent and replace it an American one. Seems more likely to be a local thing - perhaps try a local forum?

I've got an American accent even though I'm not American (specifically I sound like I'm from California, even though I have a mixed background, born in Europe and lived in Hong Kong for the past 15 years.) I just spoke English everyday and watched a lot of movies and TV, but I guess it helped that I only speak English all day, everyday.

I'm no speech therapist but I am TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualified. And I provide private tutoring at an affordable price, PM if you're interested. There's some tricks to getting any accent right I think. For example rolling r's (which is quite common in European languages) but is the most difficult for speakers of Asian languages.
I'm currently on summer vacation, but am teaching English until I start uni again. Private tutoring I do throughout the year.
