Post Calling English Teachers: What's the best way to teach a child written English?

Forwarding on my best friend's situation, would be really great for all you English teachers out there to have a look and see if you can throw in some advice :

" Hi guys. I am a university student doing her Bachelors in English, and currently tutoring a child with decent speaking skills, but his written English is rather bland and simple. His mother requires me to teach him written English by practicing his story-telling skills (written form), factual recounts, poetry and general reading. Though I have taught students, all of them were just looking for oral brushing up and the explaining homework tasks. It's one thing to be able to do it (being a 19 year old female from Canada), but it's also another thing to teach someone. If you have any lesson ideas, please let me know. Advice appreciated. Thank you! "

    Here are some useful resources:

English Writing and composition help for ESL teachers and students

Essay & Paragraph Writing: eslflow  webguide

Now you will have to choose / tailor the resources so they are appropriate to the child's level. You will also have to take into account the child's learning style.

Basically you want to start with simple sentences and messages (make sure his basic grammar is correct before moving on) and then move on step by step to short letters, simple descriptions, simple essay writing, supporting opinions, comparison and contrast writing, narration etc etc etc.

Whole heartedly agree. Developing a good reading habit is important not only for writing but for all aspects of English. Initially try to find reading material which is interesting for the student (ie inline with their interests, hobbies etc). Later on you can introduce them to different styles / genres and levels of difficulty.
