Non Local and Professional Education in Hong Kong - Info Required

    Hello Guys,

As you all may know , local universities in Hong Kong are collaborating with overseas universities ( UK , Aus ) by offering different kind of education such as Top Up Degree , MBA , Part Time & Full time,

After a long research i am confused and need your help

HKU Space are offering a top up degree - BSC ( Hons ) In Business Management awarded by Plymouth University UK,
    9 Modules , Part Time , Duration : 1.5years-2years

City U offering a similar Top Up Degree awarded by De Monfort University UK,
9 Modules , Part time , Duration 1 year only

University of sunderland in Hong Kong offers a similar degree awarded by the university of Sunderland UK,
6 Modules , Part time , Duration 9 Months only.

All programs include the below note :
Non-Local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) OrdinanceThis is an exempted course under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognize any qualification to which this course may lead.

According to the emails from those universities in the UK, the awarded Bachelor Degree in Hong Kong are totally equal and exactly the same as awarded to the students studying the program in the UK,

Despite the info from the University head office I would like to ask whether someone has the experience in participating/Graduated from these programs and can advise the below info:

What is the chance of professional recognition in Hong & overseas after graduation ?
The degree can be used to request the employer for salary increase ?
In generally , after graduation and in case for seeking a new job , what is the reaction of the companies for the degree ?

Please let me know any type of info , good and bad it will be very helpful,

    Many thanks.

Check whether the courses you need are accredited and registered under qualifications framework.

The edu bureau says "The accreditation conducted by HKCAAVQ benchmarks the non-local courses against Hong Kong’s education system and non-local courses accredited by HKCAAVQ enjoys similar status to locally-accredited programmes, and the qualification can be placed on the Qualifications Register (QR) and recognised under the QF."

Many thanks for the reply, I had found the top up degree programs provided by HKU & City U,

I couldn't find the info regarding the degree at the university of Sunderland in Hong Kong, i typed the NCR# and found it on the link below which is also of the but not the program provided by University of Sunderland in Hong kong.

However , on the below link they did mentioned the registration number of the program , EDB website (NCR# 251370)
    http://applications.edb.gov.hk/ncr/ncr_detail.aspx?langno=1&regno=251370

Does it make any difference ?
    The degree link is below,

There are myriad of top-up degrees available in Hong Kong and they are operated by different types of education institution for example local universities, extensions arms (e.g. HKUSPACE, SPEED, SCOPE, CUSCE), non-profit and private institutions (e.g. IVE - PEAK, HKMA, RDI - which is now the university of Sunderland in HK, Kaplan Higher Education, China Education Group...etc).

As you can see from the Registration Framework by HKCAAVQ, most of the operators which validate their top-up degrees are local universities, extension arms and non-profit institutions simply because they enjoy subsidies from HK Government on programme validation.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter whether the programme is being validated through QF or not because the teaching quality and qualification is identical to the programme when you study in overseas. For example, HKUST and Kellogg has a joint EMBA programme (http://emba.ust.hk/) in Hong Kong and Kellogg (School of Management of Northwestern University) will not bother validating its programme through HKCAAVQ (Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) - Accreditation)

If you are looking for the right top-up degree programme, I would recommend you to look for the top-up degree which have higher university ranking in the world, at least they are recognizable by the employers (both in HK and overseas) or HR department. On the other hand, depending on your prior academic qualification, you may also look for some top-up degrees that offer "final year" entry. This will certainly decrease your study time and cost.

If you are looking for business related top-up degree with higher university ranking, I suggest you can consider the following:

HKUSPACE x University of Hull: Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Marketing and Management - HKU SPACE: Marketing & Branding courses (Business School award AMBA and AACSB)

Kaplan x University College Dublin: https://www.kaplan.com.hk/higher-edu...t-degree-topup (Triple accredited Business School with AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS, QS world ranking 17/18: 168, Top 1% university ranking in the world). It should be the highest ranking university offering business related top-up degree programme so far in HK.

IVE x Conventry University: https://www.shape.edu.hk/programme.php?id=3414049 (Pretty good university ranking in UK. Ranked 43 at UK complete university guide 2018)

    Hope it helps

Just remember the words " It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognize any qualification to which this course may lead."
Usually those public sector jobs paid by tax payers will regard those exempted courses under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance as valid.

You will need to ask the professional bodies in HK and other countries about professional recognition of courses.

It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to increase your salary after you obtain new qualifications.

Other things in your CV, your overall background is also important to the employers.
Almost all employers want job seekers with on campus degress more, and you can see most students prefer to be admitted to a on campus degree more. But if your off campus degrees are awarded by a famous university, employers may look favourably.
