Island School Move - New Sites Confirmed

Moving all the way from Mid-Levels to the dark side.

At the Shatin District Council (Education & Welfare Committee) meeting, 4 July, ESF secured final support for Island School to decant to two campuses in Shatin Wai and Tai Wai while the buildings on Borrett Road are redeveloped.
    Over Christmas holidays.

All building work will finish in early December 2017. This will enable the move to take place over the Christmas break. We will have time around the Christmas period for staff to prepare the sites for teaching, but the dates have not yet been confirmed.
Y9,10,11 to Tai Wai rest (Y7,8,12,13) to Shatin.

Interesting times ... esp for those in Y11 and 13.

Ouch, the rebuilding on the original site will be 3-4 years.

But then those that commute from TKO / CWB/ Sai Kung permanently have an horrendous commute to KGV, so....suck it up guys

Waiting to see what the school bus fees will be like and how many parents will "move" to south island / west island zones.

This impending move has been known for some months. I know quite a few parents who have avoided applying for Island School as a result. It's my understanding that they are likely to struggle to fill their places for this September (worth knowing if you are trying to find a school). It needs doing though - their buildings are in poor condition. They had to cover up one side of a building after a huge chunk of rendering came away.

For reasons best known to ESF, Tuen Mun is in the Island School catchment, so the local contingent will get a few extra minutes lie-in for a few years.

Heard that teaching quality has gone down at Island school over the past couple of years... has anyone experienced anything as such?

A relative did their IB @ Island School a year or two ago. With a few exceptions almost all of the kids were enrolled in extra classes of some sort or the other. HK$ 50-100K / year additional expenses.

Not sure if it is related to the teachers, the curriculum/subjects or the hyper competitive results based university enrolment - probably a mix of the three. Don't think teachers are a singular point of failure at IS (or any other school...).

A friend actually moved her 2 kids from IS to Kellet as she felt IS weren't able to handle some bullying and other issues with her kids. She felt that pastoral care in IS is sadly lacking and also that there wasn't enough learning support. So, kids who are not super smart fall through the cracks. Even though she is paying a lot more at Kellet, her kids are far far happier and are learning well (with huge improvements in grades). She doesn't need to spend any time or money on extra coaching as the kids are being well served in school itself. So, if you take into account the extra $50-$100K, it seems that 'cheaper' ESF fees are not so cheap after all! I'm curious if anyone else has had this type of experience at IS?

Bullying happens in almost every school in HK and it all boils down to management and how they handle it. I've heard of kids transferring between ESF schools, or other International schools. Remember the case with the Economist and Kennedy school?
