not so rare, perhaps... but then you get idiots claiming that they are going to "unthaw" their dinner from the freezer, and one of the worse (even PhD's use it...) "irregardless"....

just because people use them DOES NOT make them correct! they are utterly wrong in their usage and this stems from poor teaching and no one actually pointing out to them the error of what they are saying.

my grandfather was a TOTAL stickler for grammar, and i'm sure if i had come to him with things such as "most prettiest", "unthawed", "irregardless" he would have had more than a few words to say to me.

ps> i have not read through her entire website, but i saw "grammar girl" on oprah on day... maybe have a look at that site, goodman... she may set you straight on a few things.

I have two ligitimate posts extracted from Google. Form you opinion anyway you like.

While I am being dinged for using "most ultimate", I will say, yes, I heard it used before and without second thought, I posted it. I have already expressed my two cents previously. To me, it's more of an issue with logic than grammar. But more and more people are using this as urban English.
Would I use it in formal writing? No. Would I say it's wrong grammatically, I think not. It's a double dip in meaning, perhaps. But it's not as bad as people saying "more better" which I heard a lot of among natives. In fact, I just heard tonight from my American born cousin while we set at the banquet table carrying on a conversation. Is he a idiot? Of course not in my opinion. He has a Master Degree from UC Berkerly in computer science and happily employed by Yahoo. There is a common misception among HK parents that natives teacher are always better; though in most cases true. Natives have the advantage but it's not to say, non-native don't have the right stuff.
There are non-native teachers who can be just as qualified but get rejected because of their non native status. So parents rather pay a premium for a native teacher. I would say this, I wouldn't want my cousin to teach my children if I were living in HK just because he is native, nothing personal.
