Question Schools and housing (kinda long)

    Hi,

My husband "may" have an opportunity in Hong Kong in the next few monthes...so we may be moving (from New Jersey, USA). If we go, we will likely be there for 3 to 5 years.

I've been looking at the American Intl School (Kowloon) and the Carmel School (Mid-Level area) for my kids. Kids will be starting 4th grade next school year. Does anyone have information about these schools (ie: academics, extracurricular, reputation, overall satisfaction, etc)

Those seem to be the only two choices for us, since my family is Jewish, and all of the other American style schools were Christian based....at least the ones that I saw online...If you know of any others (private, non-religious, American style schools), please let me know.

Anyway, I would also be interested in information concerning living near either of these schools. We would be interested in a "family" area, with other ex-pats and kids...clean air locations, modern apartment with approximately 2500+ sq. ft., all appliances (building ammenities nice also - pool, workout facility, etc). How much would something like this reasonably cost? I've seen the housing websites but also have seen forum postings saying the website prices are pretty inflated.

We will have a ex-pat package including housing (and school tuition for my kids), but I would like to know ahead of time what would be reasonable costs based on the above info, in case he needs to negotiate his package.

    Thanks in advance,
    brendat

    Same boat as you

Where did you end up living and what schools did you decide on? We have 2 kids; 1 entering 4th (boy) and 1 entering 2nd (girl) and we are in the throws of deciding whether to make the move to HK. We are not Jewish (Catholic) but were looking at the American school in Kowloon. Sent an e-mail to the Principal; waiting yo hear back from her. Was looking at either Discovery Bay or Repulse Bay but these were only initial places that some folks had recomended. Did you find any other good places to live that you might recomend?

    Good luck.

    Hi,

Actually, the opportunity that I mentioned fell through, so we are staying in the good ole USA.

I understand that Hong Kong Intl School (in Repulse Bay) is one of the best schools though. It is a Christian school with an American curriculum and is supposed to be excellent but rather expensive.

    Good Luck.

Hi, I have a friend who had the same suitation before. What we hear about American International School is not as good as Hong Kong International School. However, it is always a long waiting list for the HKIS. Also HKIS is a bit expensive too.

Another suggestion for you is Hong Kong academy School on Stubbs Road.
